Adele - Set Fire to the Rain Lyrics
Posted by
Reem Adeeb
The weather has been chronically bad here; storms with thunder so loud it makes you burrow your way into your mattress when it hits in the wee hours of the morning.... rain drops the size of golf balls and just as destructive,my awning has been folded in like origami by the sheer weight of the water...and the mosquito's? There are mozzy raids at dawn and dusk...it is all very "Apocalypse Now".
So what happened to summer? Who knows but I'll just " Set Fire to the Rain"....

To all you car buffs out there,I am proud to present my sister's new blog : Flappy Paddles.
If you drive a flash car... wished you drove a flash car or simply love all things car and avidly watch"Top Gear", I urge you to check it out.
The title is explained, I was relieved to find out that it had nothing to do with a particular ailment: a new term for hemorroides... or body malformation like "bingo wings"!
If anything, you get to read up about the latest and sometimes not so greatest, cars out there and check out some fun moments and pictures.
It is serious, well informed and funny.... it is written by my sister after all...so it has to be good!

Jeremy Clarkson beware...there is a new kid on the block.

RIP Amy Winehouse

A great talent and amazing songwriter has died and many will morn her tragic passing.
I was extremely lucky to have been present at a private function for the opening of the Fendi Boutique on the Ave Montaigne in 2008 in which Amy Winehouse treated us all with a surprise performance. And what a performance... she was thankfully coherent and enchanting, we sang along... I got ribbed by Jamie Winstone as she tried to stomp pass us lesser mortals...nasty little thing ....and despite the stellar cast of celebrities around, all eyes were on Amy.
Rest in Peace, troubled angel. Her music will live on.

A Weekend in Provence: La Maison Valvert
Posted by

We needed to get away before the mad rush of the summer, so we booked ourselves into the lovely Maison Valvert in Bonnieux and headed out for olfactory pleasures in the heart of the Luberon...wine,lavender and olive oil....Did I mention wine?
Bonnieux is in what is known as the Petit Luberon and our first stop was for lunch at the St.Andre, a little corner restaurant in the village which commanded the attention of the sun. Unfortunately the wind picked up on the attention and began its mischief. No sooner had we sat down when everything that wasn't nailed down took off....rocket leaves and radicchio went up and across the terrace, soon followed by grated carrot and my napkin. My empty bottle of Perrier toppled over and attempted take off but we caught that just in time. These diversionary tactics helped take my mind off my entree " Avocado smoothie". I expected a small shot glass of this tempting entree...instead I got a drinking glass full of tasteless baby food that Gerber would have frowned upon. My meal improved thankfully with the main dish and so did the entertainment. The wind not satisfied with flinging our food to the village pigeons, decided to up the ante by claiming new victims, an elderly couple sitting behind us who were treated to a dressing down with chocolate sauce whiplash:
" I managed to stay clean all week and look at me now...I'm covered in stains" exclaimed the elderly lady. They fled indoors afraid for their lives when their coffee was served.
La Maison Valvert is a gorgeous, deluxe B&B, tucked away behind a gated entrance high up in the green hills of Bonnieux. It is run by the delightful Cathy Herssens who welcomed us with a warm smile, a coffee and the lay of the land.
There are 4 accommodations, each one beautifully named; 2 of which are rooms that sleep 2 ,the 3rd is a suite with it own private terrace that sleeps 4 and finally the piece de resistance: the luxury tree house that sleeps two...and is simply amazing.
*Our room: No1 "Dentelles de Montmirail"
*Private terrace of suite "La Montagne de Luberon"
*Private entrance to rooftop paradise*
*TREE HOUSE:"La Cabane de Valvert*
Each room is tastefully decorated with Cathy's eye for detail...there is nothing you will lack, from bathrobes to all the lovely products in the bathroom. There is also a bottle of Valvert water, which is replaced when empty..never usually the case in some 4*establishments. The shower was lovely and big,fit for two and the loo on its pedestal...fit for a king. Apparently not all B&B's have TVs in the room...this one thankfully did as well as a safe that managed to hold my wallet hostage from the get go. To top that, each room has its own wicker basket in which you will find towels to use by the pool....loved it!
Breakfast is a BIG affair and served between 9 am and 10am , with as much variety as you please. The blackboard lists the yogurt or fromage frais du jour and where there is a local market or village event in the area. It is a cheerful affair with guests and the hosts all eating together but with only one sour note: the overzealous use of flemish with their Belgian guests. We felt a little like the outsiders at a cocktail party. There were two sets of Belgian guests and a lot of laughter and merriment between them... while we chewed on our warm croissants feeling like illegal immigrants and unable to join the fun!
Once breakfast is cleared there is always something available for you to snack on if you are lounging by the pool and "The Honesty Bar": a fridge providing you with chilled rose or champagne as well as soft drinks....the honesty part is keeping a log of your consumptions in the main house.
This place really is a haven of peace and tranquility, forget your phone...there is barely any reception at the best of times in the house... and forget your troubles...simply enjoy. All around the Maison Valvert there are places to sit, lounge or even lay...no noise,no distractions other than turning the pages of your book or the buzz of an idle bee heavy with nectar.
*View from our room*
*The breakfast area /staircase up to 2 rooms*
At the St.Andre , we had ordered a bottle of deliciously fresh and crisp rose from the "Domaine De Marie ", a stones throw away in a village called Menerbes.
We ended our stay with dinner at the magnificent Relais &Chateau: "La Coquillade" in nearby Gargas . Not only does it have its own vineyard, golf course and command a breathtaking view, the service is impeccable and the food at the Gourmet restaurant, out of this world.... An absolute treat.
We left Bonnieux and the Luberon a little heavy hearted and a car full of local delicacies. Only one thing left to do.... return.

Brother, Where Art Thou'?

My sister told me that she had just received a phone call from the manager's assistant at the healthcare company we employ for Dad.
" Oh?" I said" what did she want?"
She was calling to enquire when our next trip to London will be, as the manager would like to meet with us and Dad.
"We haven't yet made any plans" replied my sister to the assistant.
“ I see....Well how about your brother, Reem...?”
!#****!?~*** #
Dear M. (the manager):
My sister just relaid to me the conversation she had with S. regarding our next trip to London...It seems that unbeknowest to me: I have either undergone a painless sex change or Dad has a love child...in either case , Lina now seems to have a brother called Reem...
As much as the idea of a brother would please us both....I found this hysterical and howled with laughter. But what baffles me is the fact I spoke to S. only last week ....it would seem evident from my voice, that I am well and truly a woman! Or would that somehow make me gay?...
Kind regards......

“No thank you.”
“Excuse but I know you...have we met?”
“No we haven’t” replied my sister as she continued to store away her things.
“But your face says something to me” he insisted.
“Well yours says nothing to me” she replied and he bowed out gracefully.
“I think we seem to be having a problem with towels here......they seem to leave this room never to be replaced...Pretty soon we will have to start sharing them ..... ?“
We got a bag load within 5 mns, took the woman so long to store them, my nails had grown half an inch.
I called up the spa to see whether they had a treatment for legs to help the circulation:
“Oh No! Madam! We don’t do anything like that!”
You'd think that I had just asked her for a forged passport.
On our second morning we were escorted away from the main cheery breakfast area (where everyone was sitting ) into the empty cold restaurant .... I guess they wanted us to get the breakfast party started on that end:
“Are you punishing us?” inquired my sister...
We were immediately given a table in cheery land.
Abercrombie and Fitch on 5th Ave at 9.50 am: a queue literally around the corner and up the street...crowds patiently waiting to get in.
Hollister further up 5th Ave at 9.55 am: zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....no one.
Late afternoon outside A and F, people being sucked in and spewed out all looking slightly bedraggled and squinting their way back into the sunlight proudly clutching their A and F bags to their chests like victory medals. The bare chested hunk du jour being photographed with hysterical preteens, looking every bit as smug as he could until.... a man ripped off his polo and sidled up to him while his friend took a picture of them...Kodak moment: Hunkola looked decidedly out of sorts, with a face like a slapped arse...hysterical. He soon resumed his debonair hunkness when the next teen squealed beside him.
At menswear, somewhere between loud and deafening:
"Do you have cargo pants?"
......."Can you repeat the question?"
At menswear, somewhere between loud and deafening:
"Do you have cargo pants?"
......."Can you repeat the question?"
At the cash register the young cutie said to me: “U ‘ust chec' m'ic hols-ter "...with the deafening and unrelenting beat, I could hardly hear myself think let alone him telling me... What?....
“You want me to check your epic holster?! ”
“I said :You must check the EPIC Hollister!...on 5th ave?”
“ Oh!Ok...well I did.... wasn’t that epic dude.”
At the madhouse come labyrinthine Hollister on Broadway:
“ I’ll go and check” ...she then disappeared before my very eyes ....then again it was so bloody dark in there she could have been standing next to me. By the time she re appeared I felt like I had aged a decade:“Well?”
“Yes?”
“The T shirt? In XL!”
“Oh I won’t know until they bring it to me....”
“So you have one then...”
“I don’t know..... Until they bring it to me.”
We left.
Now for restaurants:
"Lavo" on 39th East 58th Str.: fantastic food, great laid back vibe at lunch time with a gorgeous smiling waitress who kept us topped with hot crusty garlic baguette while we sipped on chilled white wine. She recommended the Chopped Louie salad that is so heavenly we returned 2 days later with friends and jumped back in again. Great food, great service an absolute must.
"Lupa ", Mario Batali’s restaurant on a quiet leafy street on Thompson: the hostess, not so great with that whole business of: “Is your party all here? I can’t seat you until they are”...crap. We were all there bar my cousin who popped up in no time, until then there was no talking this woman into seating us. The restaurant is quite small, very casual with a large bar and rowdy atmosphere. The food was delicious and soon made up for the inconvenience of standing around when a perfectly empty table for 4 was waiting for us...Wine took the edge off and we soon were tucking into some delightful anti pasti before we dove into our pasta ....it was to cry for...Gorgeous food and top notch service, apart from the hostess...
“Essex house ,please.”
Cab pulled up to the Ritz Carlton:
“ Would you like us to change hotels?”
Conversations with "P.Bibi” aka Buff Daddy and dear friend (no malice intended P, just a spot of pun!):
At Saks shoe emporium while I was hovering over the Miu Miu shoes I have been coveting: "Why are you looking at those shoes, Reem...they are for pole dancers in Vegas...”
Walking around with my sister: "I don’t get why some of these unknown Italian designer shoes are so expensive...I mean who has ever heard of Zanotti?”
“Erm....everyone!”
At "A Voce" in the Time Warner Centre: an upscale paysan restaurant, where one would expect to run into Carmela Soprano and her crew downing bottles of Pinot Grigio... We were ordering small but getting rather large portions as starters, P.Bibi leaned into my sister and said: “You could feed a family of four on that!” We chuckled and tucked in...Next course ,the main course and a hearty amount once again: “Are you enjoying it? You could feed a family of four!”
“P. You've fed them already...they're not hungry anymore!"
Dinner at "Jean Georges" and guests of the delightfully gorgeous Aliki and her debonaire partner Seth: the restaurant had a mixed bag clientele and all pomp and circumstance whenever a dish was dutifully placed infront of us... an announcement was made by the "town crier" followed by the removal of the cloches by the silent waiters....
Aliki was the life and soul of the party with such tales to tell and one liners that had us in hysterics..I hope I do them justice here:
" I went to Banana Republic looking for trousers....All I found was rags!"
" I love Tiger Woods...so he was unfaithful! He married an aupair for goodness sake...what is an aupair? A maid!"
"When I was much younger in Greece..before I became a freak..."
When time for dessert came Aliki ,sharing our love for icecream ,totally disregarded the chi chi dessert menu and asked the bored head waiter: " What kind of ice cream do you have?" He mentioned a few standard ones.
" But those are sorbets...You are not very enthusiastic about ice cream are you ?"
*Outside The New York Palace Hotel...waiting for Chuck Bass...*
We had a wonderful if not extremely hot stay in New York: my feet swelled to twice their size, my calves became cankles...but I let nothing distract me.
Thanks to Philippe and my dear friend Janet Bibi who joined us on our stay and made it that more entertaining.
To my aunt Sousou and her daughter, our long lost cousin Sam...without whom a trip down memory lane would have been quite useless and a lot less fun and for making us discover restaurants under our very nose...Bodega del Vino!
And to Aliki and Seth who entertained us way beyond our bedtime...
I hope I can still pack a verbal punch at 85.

Natasha Bedingfield - Pocketful Of Sunshine

...
This is cheerful and addictive .
There is a part towards the end when Natasha sings:
"There's a place that I go that nobody knows
Where the rivers flow and I call it home
And there's no more lies in the darkness there's light
And nobody cries, there's only butterflies..." ....Does Mariah know about this place? Should somebody give her directions?
